Sustainable web design
Did you know that the internet is responsible for roughly one billion tonnes of greenhouse gases a year, or around two percent of world emissions? This makes it an equal to the airline industry when it comes to carbon output. This is mainly due to manufacturing, shipping, powering and cooling of hardware. For example, when you look up a website on your smartphone, your phone needs to be cooled. The web server that hosts that particular website and is processing your visit needs to be powered and cooled, drawing electricity from local grids. In fact 40% of all of the energy used to power the internet is used to keep servers from overheating and failing, fail, blasting them with arctic temperature air all day every day.
Moreover, every time we use a search engine to look something up there’s and output of greenhouse gasses because of the multitude of servers involved. An average website produces 1.76 grams of carbon dioxide per page view. An average years worth of incoming business emails creates a carbon footprint of around 135kg. These are things we need to be aware of when interacting with the world wide web. It has real consequences for our environment.
Minimising our impact
When it comes to the web there are a lot of things we can do to minimise our impact. The rule of thumb is that a well constructed and well organised website creates fewer carbon emissions. The less there is to load, the less electricity will be required. If the power that is being used is generated using only renewable energy, then we’re on the right track.
As one of the services at Greener Graphics, we design and build great looking websites that work fast and efficiently, bringing down the amount of processing power needed to make it all tick. Our websites are stored with the industry’s leading eco-friendly green web hosting provider, making them as energy efficient as possible.
Sustainable graphic design
When setting up our business 20 years ago we were, understandably, very excited to get started with designing our own logo and using that logo to promote our business. We designed a very nice business card with a slick protective coating to give it a bit more shine. You can get good use out of business cards, but naturally at some point that type of promotional material gets thrown away by the people you’ve handed it to.
It turns out that because of that slick protective coating, that business card of ours can’t be recycled and will end up lying in a landfill for quite a number of years. The idea of this struck deeply, and became the motivation to shift to sustainable designing and the start of Greener Graphics.
Aside from our green office practices, we work together with top eco friendly printing companies. We will make sure these will always be as much in your locality as possible in order to minimise your project’s carbon footprint. When you are based further afield in a location we haven’t supplied to before, we will look out for one close to you.
When agreeing to a project with Greener Graphics we will discuss all the possible parts that help the design of your project to be as eco friendly as possible. This service includes obvious ones like (recycled) paper choices, and v.o.c. free printing inks, but also areas like printer emissions, as well as efficient use of fill colours and bleeds. Your sustainable graphic design project will be in safe hands.
